Columnas

Las enormes columnas de piedra arenisca que sostienen la basílica están armadas con basas, tambores de fuste y capiteles romanos reaprovechados y montados sin considerar el sentido estético de los romanos y de sus cánones. Los elementos son romanos, pero su disposición no. Aquellos que levantaron la ermita usaron estos elementos por su funcionalidad y movidos por razones de economía de materiales y sólo cuidaron el colocar próximos al presbiterio los elementos más dicentes, para dirigir la atención de los asistentes hacia el altar.

The huge sandstone columns that support the basilica contain the three basic elements of every column: a base, or plinth; the shaft, and the capital. But in this case, these elements were reused and piled without any concern for the Roman sense of aesthetics nor for the Roman canons. The work is Roman, but their arrangement is not. Those who built the hermitage used these pieces to be functional – and due to reasons of economy -, and only cared about placing the most decent elements closer to the presbytery in order to draw the people's attention towards the altar.
